Ground Breaking Ceremony For
Kiwanis Family House
Sacramento, CA, April 15, 2004 — A groundbreaking ceremony was held today at the future site of the Kiwanis Family House in Sacramento, California. The event, hosted by local chapters of the Kiwanis Club, marks the beginning of construction of a new Kiwanis Family House dedicated to the support of families of seriously ill or injured children being treated at UCD Medical Center.
The current House is at capacity and will no longer accommodate the number of families needing temporary housing. The new facility will accommodate 32 families.
“Over the years, the Kiwanis Family House has contributed a great deal to the Sacramento community, “said Sacramento City Councilmember, Steve Cohn. “I am proud to be a part of this community and to be here celebrating this important event.”
“The Kiwanis Family House has helped thousands of families over the past 20 years,” said Gary Christensen, President of the Kiwanis Family House. “Today, we broke ground and began building the foundation that solidifies our commitment to serving the children of the future.”
The Kiwanis Family House is a non-profit group that assists families whose children are being treated for a serious illness or injury at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento by providing affordable temporary housing near the hospital. Guests at the House have immediate access to their child’s bedside, free shuttle service to the hospital, and a staff of caring volunteers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Since the doors opened in 1984, over 11,000 families have stayed at the Kiwanis Family House, from all over the country and the world.
