Kiwanis Family House Grand Opening Ceremonies to be held at
UC Davis Health Systems

Sacramento, CA — Final touches are being put on the new Kiwanis Family House as dozens of volunteers and construction workers prepare for its grand opening ceremonies. The two-day event, hosted by local chapters of the Kiwanis Club, marks the completion of a year-long project to dedicated to the supporting families of seriously ill or injured children being treated at UCD Medical Center.

The new facility, located adjacent to the UC Davis M.I.N.D. Institute on 50th street, will accommodate 32 families. The previous Kiwanis Family House was at capacity and could no longer accommodate the number of families needing temporary housing.

“I have looked forward to this opening of our new Kiwanis Family House,” said Leona Bright, Founder of the Kiwanis Family House. “I have many fond memories about the building of the original house. My husband Vern spearheaded that drive and overcame the obstacles as they popped up. Therefore I feel sad about its closing. But the new one! I like the way it is set up! It is beautiful and many new guestrooms. I can hardly wait until it is open.”

"The dedication, determination and leadership that the Kiwanis organization and its volunteers have displayed in planning and completing such a wonderful facility is truly impressive," said Claire Pomeroy, vice chancellor for Human Health Sciences at UC Davis Health System. "By providing more housing support for families of patients while they
receive care at our medical center, the new Kiwanis Family House brings hope and
caring to those in our community who are battling serious illness or injury. "

"Our dream is finally a reality,” said Loring Turrell, President of the Kiwanis Family House. “The new Kiwanis Family House will be able help many more families than we ever thought possible."

The Kiwanis Family House is a non-profit group that assists families of children who are being treated for a serious illness or injury at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento by providing affordable temporary housing near the hospital. Guests at the House have immediate access to their child’s bedside, free shuttle service to the hospital, and a staff of caring volunteers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Since the doors opened in 1984, over 12,000 families have stayed at the Kiwanis Family House, from all over the country and the world.
