SACRAMENTO KINGS ANNOUNCE EIGHTH ANNUAL COMMUNITY CUP PARTNERSHIP WITH THE KIWANIS
FAMILY HOUSE
Eighth Annual $100,000 Donation Will Help Fund Construction of the New Kiwanis Family House Located in Sacramento
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 1, 2006 – The Sacramento Kings and Maloof family have announced the Kiwanis Family House is this year’s beneficiary of the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup, a $100,000 donation generated by proceeds from a Kings home pre-season game and donated to an area capital investment project. The Kiwanis Family House is the eighth consecutive recipient of the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup.
The Kiwanis Family House provides temporary housing and support to families of seriously ill or injured children being treated at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Guests of the Kiwanis Family house have immediate access to their family member’s bedside, free shuttle service to the hospital and a staff of caring volunteers available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Since opening in 1984, more than 12,000 families have stayed at the Kiwanis Family House.
“This season’s donation will help fund the construction of the new Kiwanis Family House,” said Joe Maloof, co-owner of Maloof Sports & Entertainment. “We are honored to be able to contribute to an organization that provides such a vital service to our community.”
“The original Kiwanis Family House was in poor condition, at capacity and could no longer accommodate the number of families needing temporary housing in the area,” said Gavin Maloof, co-owner of Maloof Sports & Entertainment. “The new house replaces the original 13-bed facility with a completely modernized 32-bed, state-of-the-art building that will serve children and families in-need for many years to come.”
“We just celebrated the grand opening of the new Kiwanis Family House two weeks ago,” said Loring Turnell, president of the Kiwanis Family House. “Our dream is finally a reality, and with the help of the Community Cup donation the new Kiwanis Family House will be able to help many more families than we ever thought possible.”
Introduced in 1999, one home game of the Kings pre-season schedule has been deemed the George J. Maloof Sr. Community Cup. Each season, the Maloof family pledges $100,000 to a local charitable cause in the name of their father. Past Community Cup projects have included the Cathedral Restoration Project, Airport Little League, Hemispheres After-School Arts Academy, the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation, La Familia Counseling Center, St. Patrick’s Home and School for Children and last season’s Sacramento Local Conservation Corps.
E&J Gallo, Sports 1140 KHTK and News10 help raise awareness and additional funds to benefit the Community Cup and are proud partners of the Sacramento Kings.
